Nutrition and Supportive Care for Cats with FIP

FIP can place significant stress on a cat’s body. Cats may experience increased metabolic demands, reduced appetite, weight loss, and changes in liver function. Providing adequate nutrition, hydration, and a calm environment can be an important part of supportive care.

A. High-Quality Protein, Easy to Digest, and Gentle on the Stomach

Cats with FIP may lose muscle mass and body weight during illness. Providing adequate, high-quality animal-based protein can help support their nutritional needs and maintain body condition.

B. Small, Frequent Meals

When a cat is sick, appetite and digestion may be affected, making it difficult to eat a large meal at once. Offering smaller portions several times a day may be easier for some cats to tolerate than feeding large meals less frequently.

C. Hydration Support — Especially Important

Cats with FIP may be at risk of dehydration, particularly when they have a fever, reduced appetite, or are not drinking normally.

Make sure fresh water is always available. Wet food and other moisture-rich foods can also help increase daily fluid intake. If you are concerned that your cat is not getting enough fluids, talk with your veterinarian about appropriate ways to support hydration.

D. Supporting Healthy Liver Function

FIP can affect multiple organs, including the liver. Changes in bloodwork may sometimes indicate that the liver is under stress.

During this time, focus on providing a complete and balanced diet and avoid unnecessary dietary changes or foods that may be difficult for your cat to tolerate. If your veterinarian identifies changes in liver function, follow their recommendations for diet and monitoring.

E. A Calm, Low-Stress Environment

Try to minimize unnecessary stress during your cat’s illness. Avoid frequent changes in environment, excessive noise, unnecessary bathing, or other situations that may cause fear or anxiety.

A quiet, comfortable environment can help your cat rest and maintain more stable daily routines while they are recovering.
